The Chairman Inter-Party Advisory Council, (IPAC) Alhaji Yagbagi Sani has urged the political class to review what happened during this year’s general election with a view to finding out what needed to be sustained or changed in deepening the nation’s democracy.
Alhaji Sani stated this on Tuesday in Abuja during a post election Conference with the theme, Political Parties, 2023 Elections and the future of Democracy in Nigeria, organized by the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru.
The IPAC Chairman said for Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) to conduct free, fair and credible elections, some adjustments needed to be made in the appointment of its key officers.
In a remark, the Executive Director, YIAGA AFRICA, Mr Samson Itodo said the nation needed more than Election Technology to deliver Credible Elections to the citizenry.
The Inspector General of Police, (IGP) Usman Alkali Baba represented by the Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Basil Idegwu the conference was apt as the country needed to look beyond the 2023 general election and put in place what would ensure the sustainability of the nation’s democracy.
The Director of Research, NIPPS, Professor Pam Dung Sha said the Conference was convened to look for a way forward towards future elections in the country.
“We are aware that there are positive sides of elections, and we are also aware of the negative sides of elections. We need to have a platform that will take stock of the developments that happen during the elections for us to chart a way forward. “
In a keynote address, a former INEC National Commissioner, Professor Okechukwu Ibeanu urged the elected representatives to ensure they fulfil their campaign promises to the people, and ensure greater involvement of the youths and technology in future elections.
