Several shops at the Mgbuka Obosi Old Motor Spare Parts Market in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State were destroyed by fire on Saturday night. The blaze, which started around 3 a.m., affected three shops, including a provision store.
The fire is believed to have been caused by a power surge due to poor electrical connections in one of the affected shops. According to Samuel Ifurunwa, Chairman of the market, the faulty connection sparked when electricity was restored, igniting the blaze. Efforts by market security operatives to control the fire were unsuccessful, and the fire spread to two other shops, exacerbated by the presence of fuel.
Firefighters from Okpoko eventually extinguished the fire after several hours of battling the flames. Despite the significant damage, many other shops in the market were saved, and no lives were lost.
The individual responsible for the illegal electrical connection has been arrested. Market officials have reiterated warnings against unauthorized electrical work, emphasizing that only approved electricians are permitted in the market.
Humphrey Anuna, President General of the Anambra State Markets Amalgamated Traders Association, expressed concern over the frequent fire incidents linked to illegal connections and urged traders to avoid placing structures under high-tension cables.
