The former Governor of Zamfara state, Ahmad Yerima has requested that President Bola Ahmes Tinubu should emplore dialoguing with bandits rather than enforcing military power to addressing the insecurity challenge of insurgency in the country.
He stated that the economy failure and states of illiteracy in the region have lured some people into the act of engaging in the criminal act.
For many years now, Zamfara State, located in North-West region, has been a flash-point of armed conflict between the military and bandits who have struggled to control the mineral-rich regions of the state.
The former Governor suggested this while speaking with State House correspondents after a courtesy visit to the President.
Yerima added that he’s stand is similar to what the administration of former President Umar Yar’Adua did with militants in the Niger Delta, which gave birth to the amnesty programme.
Recall that in year 2009, President Yar’Adua granted amnesty to militants in the oil-producing Niger Delta region to tackle the problems of stealing crude oil and kidnapping oil workers.
