The Chief Observer, European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) to Nigeria, Barry Andrews says the 2023 election exposed systemic weaknesses that signal a need for further legal and operational reforms to enhance transparency, inclusiveness, and accountability.
He stated this in Abuja at the presentation of the 2023 election findings and recommendations.
Mr Andrews said the shortcomings in law and electoral administration hindered the conduct of well-run and inclusive elections and damaged trust in INEC.
The EU EOM offered 23 recommendations for consideration by the Nigerian authorities with six priority areas which Mr Andrews said the mission was particularly concerned about the need for reform.
The priority area, according to the Chief Observer, include the removal of ambiguities in the law, establishment of a publicly accountable selection process for INEC members, and to ensure real-time publication of and access to election results.
Other areas include the provision of greater protection for media practitioners, addressing discrimination against women in political life, and impunity regarding electoral offenses.
Mr Andrews, according FRCN stated that there was equally the need for political will to achieve improved democratic practices in Nigeria.
He added that Inclusive dialogue between all stakeholders on electoral reform remains crucial.
