Sporting Lisbon eliminated Arsenal from the Europa League by winning 5-3 on penalties, following a remarkable equalizer by Pedro Goncalves in the second leg of the last 16. Goncalves scored from 46 yards out, which was similar to David Beckham’s famous chip for Manchester United in 1996. The game went into extra time and then penalties, where Sporting emerged victorious. Arsenal had taken the lead through Granit Xhaka’s first-half goal, but also suffered injuries to defenders William Saliba and Takehiro Tomiyasu. Arsenal have not won a European trophy since 1994 and will have to wait another year. In contrast, they are five points clear of Manchester City in the Premier League. Arsenal made five changes to their starting line-up to rest key players ahead of their game against Crystal Palace, while Gabriel Jesus made his first start for Arsenal since undergoing knee surgery. Sporting’s victory was their first in England since 2005.
