Napoli will face Sassuolo on Friday to extend their lead in Serie A by 18 points. Victor Osimhen’s eight goals in the team’s six-game unbeaten run have been crucial to their success. Napoli’s previous Serie A titles were in 1986-87 and 1988-90 during the Diego Maradona era. They have only dropped seven points in 22 matches this season and lead their nearest rivals by 15 points. A win in their seventh straight game could all but secure their lead in the league. Napoli’s only setback was a penalty shootout exit from the Coppa Italia against Cremonese last month.
Osimhen has 17 goals in 18 league games and is attempting to match the goals totals of former Napoli players Dries Mertens and Gonzalo Higuain.
Mertens had 18 goals in 2017-18, while Higuain had the same number in 2014-15. According to Transfermarkt, Osimhen is the third fastest player in the top five European Leagues, clocking a top speed of 36.61km/h against Lazio on September 3, 2022.
