The West African regional bloc, Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, has condemned the September 30, 2022 coup that took place in Burkina Faso, where a new military junta overthrew another.
The statement’s author, the President of the Commission, reiterates the regional body’s unequivocal opposition to any appropriation or maintenance of power through unlawful means and calls for strict adherence to the timeline already established with the Transitional Authorities for a prompt restoration of constitutional order no later than July 1, 2024. It adds Any institution, force, or group that might act in a way that thwarts the planned restoration of constitutional order or undermines peace and stability in Burkina Faso and the region is forewarned by ECOWAS. The ECOWAS Commission further stated that it continues to monitor the evolution of the situation.
